New Orleans is a mess. It was brought to its knees by Katrina, and is being kept there by a toxic combination of federal neglect and colossal, mind-numbing ineptitude at the local level.
So true.
I fear that the black political elite, [mayor, police chief, DA - a convicted black racist - and most of the city council] would rather ruin the city and feather their own nests than deal with the issues. If they can keep the city a majority black city, they will continue to prosper as racial attitudes are set in concrete. There is no way that a white mayor can be elected, no matter how competent.
The question is why the black populace puts up with an incompetent city administration, an incompetent police department, a school system so bad the school board had to be disssolved and taken over by the state, and a racist DA who lets the violent criminals run free. The fact that poor blacks suffer much, much more from this than whites, who can live in safe neighborhoods and pay for private schools, doesn't seem to sink in. Or make a difference. So long as the majority black voters don't care, we're screwed.
For a bit more on our corruption, this time Morial style, see this:

Marc Morial, former mayor and complete crook, is head of then Urban League now. I don't think this is what MLK looked for when he did his thing.
Mayor Nagin, who is essentially an empty suit these days, depressed, I hear, has picked up an interesting nickname - "Car 54". |
