Could be true, as all of the students that I have known from Ghana were very pleasant and social, although not necessarily gifted. One thing to keep in mind is that we in the West have made a trade-off (some say Faustian) between materialism and community/spiritualism -- life expectancy in Ghana is some 30 years less than in the U.S., at least in part because of the benefits that materialism brings for health/longevity (I know there are health downsides as well to materialism, but the fact that they don't appear until the 30 year advantage is gained suggests that there is room for improvement in how materialism is practiced, not that materialism is ipso facto bad for society).
