are you aware that EVERY major canadian company was seriously considering converting to the income trust structure to avoid paying taxes?

and that withholding tax on foreigners is at much lower rate, and even worse is that RRSP's that most canadians invest through pay no tax?

so when a couple of the biggest companies announced their intention to convert, there was about to be a MAJOR hole in canadian government revenues.

the situation had clearly changed from the time of the election campaign, and so harper responded. perhaps there were alternatives worthy of debate, but it's very misleading for you to call this lying on a nixonian scale
