Kindergartners cannot understand the concept of negative numbers supposedly. Mine did when they arrived. My son did both addition and subtraction well when he arrived. My daughter did addition well and struggled with subtraction. At that stage she was counting the additional fingers. You might try showing her that.

I have four toys. (One, two, three, four) I get two more. (One two) How many toys do I have now, pause, how many fingers do I have?

They are doing math a couple grades ahead of what grade they are in. I am currently working on the concept of base numbering with them. My son grasped how I count to 31 on one hand but asked me if he saw what he thought he saw when I counter four. (Hint in binary.) They still don't get base 2, 8 or base 16, but with repetition, I can get it through to them. I have had to work through each math concept with them several times when introducing a new one. Because we usually do it in the context of a distraction, I never seem to have paper and pencil available. This makes it harder, but once they grasp it, they own it.

I am also working on the concept of conjugation, one most Americans never encounter until they try to learn a foreign language. It should help them immensely with their grammar, and when they take an additional language, it will not be foreign to them.

They also have developed large vocabularies because they ask what the words mean.
