Sen. Allard To Retire, Setting Up Chance Of Key Dem Pickup In West
electioncentral.tpmcafe.com

In a move that opens the posibility that Dems may pick up a key Senate seat in the West, GOP Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado has just announced he is not running for a third term, The Denver Post reports. With the seat now open, two Dems considering a run are Rep. Mark Udall and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the Post reports. On the GOP side, potential candidates include former Reps. Scott McInnis and Bob Schaeffer.

Allard claims he's retiring to make good on a two-term pledge, but it seems likely that the prospect of being in the minority, combined with strong Dem gains in Colorado putting his seat increasingly at risk, are weighing on his mind as well. In the last two cycles, Dems have picked up both state legislative houses, two House seats, a Senate seat and the Governorship — so the now-open seat will likely be a top target for the DSCC in 2008.
