The unbiased media 12-Jan-07 02:11 pm

I've never harbored any illusions to whether the local newsmedia in Portland, ME holds a liberal bias that is way out of proportion with the views of the constituency as a whole. That said, the news local news broadcast I was forced to endure yesterday evening was off the scale and, unfortunately, is a microcosm of what takes place throughout the country.

For openers, the lead story was an "anti-escalation" rally in downtown Portland-- a.k.a. this was the single most important event that transpired in the region yesterday. OK...it's a free country, and I staunchly endorse the right of all individuals to voice their opinions. The media coverage, however, was ridiculous. Appx. "100 people" (sounds better than 75) showed up. Even in a small city of 60,000 people, this is not impressive. On an average evening, there are at least that many people in line at the dozen or so check out counters at my local supermarket.

So...instead of just letting this pass as the quaint little event that it was, the local TV channel decided to delve into the dark art of cinematography. Specifically, instead of filming this unimpressive collective from a distance and showing it in its properly sparse perspective, the cameraman went to great length to get a sweeping front-row close-up in an attempt to make a few dozen people look like a Roman legion. Toss in a couple of up close and personal interviews with an aging hippie or two and the libbo "Triumph of the Will" hits your living room as "fact."

Naturally, they followed this "big news" up with coverage of several "smaller" events in other parts of the state. Naturally, no dissenting opinion was heard, nor was it solicited. Yet another shining example of how the media in this country are, on a daily basis, actively doing the work of those committed to the destruction of Western civilization."
