Oh gosh, Rudi....One of the ladies I talk about is actually a relative of mine. She wrote a book about her memories of the trip across the country on the Oregon Trail. Her two year old daughter helped her pick up mud muffins for fires at night...they walked alongside the wagon as it was going across. Little kids had lots to do and ways they were expected to help while growing up ... on the trail, they mostly tried to find wood pieces or twigs. Sometimes they picked berries.

Families had to have everyone work together in order to survive.
