Newly elected Virginia Sen. Jim Webb — an early opponent of the Iraq war, a critic of President Bush’s current proposal to increase troop strength there, and a vocal advocate of economic populism — will deliver the Democratic Party’s response to Bush’s State of the Union address on Jan. 23.

Webb’s political credentials and background in the military surely were the major factors in the decision by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada to choose Webb for the role.

Webb’s defeat of Republican Sen. George Allen last November clinched a Democratic Senate majority, installing Reid in his role as the top-ranking senator.

And with Bush pressing his plan to add more than 20,000 U.S. military personnel to the current troop commitment in Iraq — in the face of strong public opposition to the war — Webb emerged as a natural spokesman for the Democrats’ contrary views.

Webb is a Vietnam War veteran and a former Navy secretary under President Ronald Reagan, who only in recent years has broken longstanding ties with the Republican Party — mainly because of his disagreements with the Bush administration’s Iraq policy.
