Elroy, we still buy Middle Eastern oil and we still support Israel. Even if we reduce our oil consumption by 25%, which itself is a tall order, we'll still be buying their oil. And no matter what, Americans will never rescind their support for Israel.

Hence it is in America's interest to see peace and stability come to the Middle East. Nations and people groups in the Middle East that are belligerent to one another are also going to be belligerent to the United States simply because we're the greatest source of foreign influence in the region.

So to leave Iraq in its current state of sectarian violence would be a huge risk to the security and interests of America. We'll basically allow the formation of another pre-9/11 Afghanistan, and that's unacceptable in my mind.
