Most of the stuff they use here is sort of in between sand and gravel. I call it "pea gravel", but I'm not sure if that's the correct term.

Falling on ice is a lot worse than falling on gravel. One week during ice season we had fifty people with broken bones. I've had several spectacular falls, but no serious damage so far.
