Maliki calls on US to better arm Iraqi army...Now what to do? (Is this disinformation, or should we kick him in the behind?) Two articles, same story, presented differently....

I agree with Maliki in that the supply chain for Iraqi units is inadequate...same same combat support capacity.

There are reasons weapons security has been inadequate. A friend of mine is investigating the disappearance of 10,000 glocks.
But....weapons security at unit level is not that difficult to achieve, and it should be easier at depot level. It is likely a matter of security priorities - does one use limited resources to guard depots or to attack insurgents?
Basic security like this should improve dramatically once Iraqi military and police forces exceed a certain fundamental number.

Combat support is a more difficult matter. Iraq needs updated tanks, artillery and combat aircraft. They also need operators trained to use and maintain this equipment and they need leaders trained in how to deploy units so equipped. And they need a supply and resupply capability.

I believe the weapons security should be rapidly attainable. Adequate combat support will take many years.

I do not believe the bloodshed is close to ending. Maliki's remark, "Sunni and Shia had lived in peace for many years."
is naive. They have been slaughtering each other for a long time. I see no indications that those hostilities are coming to a close.
