Ian,

Have you heard of Celgene and Thalomid? Companies that pursue pharmaceutical agents in clinic will make their profit. You are looking for a free ride. Please stop your pedantic diatribe with me. Whatever works will find a way to market. Better, newer drugs will overcome deficiencies of older medicine and will cost more money, and generate more profit for pharma.
