"We are a community Tim, not a science project."

You know, it occurs to me that this is at the heart of the problems I have with all the libertarians I have gotten to know. Never could put my finger on it as solidly as you have done, but they all discount that aspect. We are a community, and in a larger sense, a civilization. It isn't everyman for himself and the Devil take the hindmost. It can be, but that is why we form communities and civilizations. It isn't communism or rampaging socialism to accept that. It is a human instinct to form communities because it enhances their survival rate. There is also a sense of competition too, to try to maximize one's own survival. Which means there is a tension that results in trade offs. Extreme libertarians lean strongly to the latter. Extreme socialism to the former. Neither is going to be stable because they both deny one or the other of these aspects, and those aspects shaped human evolution for millennia.
