Trucker gets life for deadly human-smuggling scheme
A Texas jury has sentenced a truck driver to life in prison for a human-smuggling scheme that left dead 19 of 100 illegal immigrants packed into his tractor-trailer in 2003. He could have received the death penalty.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the same jury that convicted Tyrone Williams last month deliberated 5 1/2 days before sentencing him today — his 36th birthday. He has no possibility of parole.
