So what if it isn't sustained?

Not being sustained isn't a problem, but it might mean that there actually isn't any extra profit. My response was not "Oh my God the sales might not be sustained", but was a way of demonstrating how there might not be extra profit. It also wasn't "Oh my god there might not be extra profit". The extra profit over the long hall wasn't a big concern of mine, I only brought up the issue in response to "Who says there wasn't any profit? Their sales generally went up, a lot."

"the prices also serve as a signal of what items are needed and how badly their needed."

Give me a break. The list of needed items is pretty obvious, it isn't like it is a huge secret.

Certain items are going to be needed very badly most of the time, and its probably possible to figure out that they are needed even without any price signals. But exactly how much, and exactly where? Maybe not. Look at FEMA and the way it dealt with ice for Katrina.

Also there are many other important goods that aren't on the top of the list of the most obvious critical goods.

Anybody who profits off of other people's misery is below contempt.

Anyone who profits off causing other people's misery might be below contempt, but anyone who profits from alleviating peoples misery is providing a useful service. A doctor might profit from my misery by treating some disease. The doctor might charge a lot more than the ice sellers, would you say he is below contempt?

You can use the same argument to favor those in a black market or smugglers.

Unless they are causing misery or great risk I don't think what they are doing is really wrong. Lets say some dictatorship bans books supporting freedom and democracy. Is smuggling them in to the country wrong? You might say that those smugglers aren't motivated by a profit motive, ok fine (even though there still smugglers and I don't think there is anything wrong with the profit motive) lets say its pornography (consensual, adult porn) that is banned by the regime. Is the smuggler trying to bring in and sell "Debbie does Dallas" automatically an evil person?

The best way to make the black market smaller and reduce the number of smugglers, is not to go around banning a bunch of things that don't need to be banned, and not to put ridiculously high taxes on things.
