I'm sick of politicians committing us to decisions that have consequences way beyond the immediate.

Once we get into a war, if the reasons for getting into it are good, it is worthwhile staying until the thing is done. Otherwise don't get in it in the first place.

And who was it that got us into Vietnam in the first place? Politicians who didn't think about the long term consequences, how much sacrifice it would entail, and how long it would take. The exact same thing that Nixon and Kissinger did when they got us out of it.

I'm a forester by profession. Like war, forestry is an enterprise that has far reaching consequences. Once you arrive at an objective and go after that objective, quitting has dire effects. Foresters, especially those in my specialty (silviculture), are required to anticipate the effects of their decisions for hundreds of years. We can do that pretty well now, but our decisions are often upset or preempted by -- the very same politicians who gave us the original objectives in the first place. Only now, flexibility is gone.

What is it with these people? Do they not think in any time segments longer than the election cycle?
