It's not that NT can't cut it. MS runs their site out of only a few boxes actually serving HTTP. MS also has "bandwidth throtling" enabled and a client limit, so that those who are on the site can get decent transfer rates.

PS.. today is the launch of IE 4.0 final.. so they are probably racking up about 30,000,000 hits..
