I never took an engineering course or the related math courses. I, have, however utilized the services of umpteen engineer types over the years as expert witnesses. I learn the analysis as applied to the particular subject matter for presentation in each case. Ergo, I know a little about a lot of things, but have to dust off the little gray cells each time an engineering analysis is required.

When I was a neophyte lawyer, the senior partner at my firm used me as a jury guinea pig. He'd have the experts explain their opinions to me on cases I knew nothing about to see if I understood what they were talking about...lol. (This was usually on product liability cases.)
