Maybe there isn't as much of anti-Catholic bias anymore, but it's still there because of some of the beliefs not being in step with current views. However, being anti-Christian is tolerated to a much higher degree than being anti anything else - especially being anti the biggest critics of Christians. Say something anti-Christian and you're likely to get cheers from many on the left. Say something anti any other group and you're career is pretty much over.

The alignment with the neo-cons makes me want to puke because I find that group of individuals disgusting for many reasons, but I think that's mostly a protestant sect with some very strange interpretations of the "end times" and Israel's role.
