Tech,

Your post highlights the problems that Garmin will face in the next few years. They need to understand these threats and put together a serious effort in maintaining their competitive edge over rivals in the areas of map displays and GPS solution quality.

In my mind they need to incorporate one or more air links to the internet through either an EV-DO or HSPDA data card, or a WiFi connection at home or work. They can then add location-based services (LBS) and thereby display traffic information or discount coupons from nearby shops that can be displayed on their maps, for example. These were some of the original ideas for LBS. IMO, they have the best opportunity of all manufactures to make this happen.

If they let the competition add real-time data functionality first, a few years from now they won’t know what hit them. If the competition creates very low-cost PNDs, and Garmin decides to move more toward the high-end units, they will be “marked for death.” I think that they really need to stay competitive at the low end of the market.
