I always thought Mort Topfer was the genius behind Dell's success. Rollins was smart, and fed good information but he just didn't pay attention to the people. Once Rollins was in charge he kept trying little experiments of moving divisions or outsourcing some function for a while without realizing that Dell actually had a whole bunch of interlocking processes that had grown up piecemeal as the company grew. It was not the way anyone would design a company, but it was the way it worked until it was broke. Rollins had the business school idea that all of these processes were interchangeable. I guess they eventually were, however the process could have been a lot smoother.
