Wayne, She has several strikes against her. She has one big asset: The first time in decades and the last time the country had peace, prosperity, a balanced budget, a strong dollar, civil rights and economic innovation was when her husband was President. As two more dreary years of war, borrow & spend and shredding of The Constitution go by, voters may eventually allow reality to overcome their emotional distaste. She's still a long shot, IMHO, but nobody else has a winning record managing the government.
I don't see us getting a disaster, even from the Republicrooks, this time. McCain isn't my cup of tea, but he is so much superior to Bush as to wonder if they are of the same species. I don't think Romney has a real shot. Fortunately for the country, Mukaka lost his Senate seat and Frist seems to be quickly forgotten by everyone. Giuliani is more like Bill Clinton than any other candidate, even Hillary. Huckabee would be great, but I see no chance there. He's way too bright and informed for the GOP to understand him.
On the Democratic side, Obama may get rookie of the year, but I doubt the country will want another on the job training case in The Whitehouse right now. Unlike Bush, Obama could learn. But I think we'll want someone who can hit the ground running to undo the Bush mess. We may get a caretaker Republican, who, like George H.W. Bush, can start the job of untangling the sins of the previous 8 years, but the voters would have to have a longer attention span than I believe they have. I like Edwards a lot. I liked him better than Kerry last time. And he handed Cheney his butt on a platter during the Vice Presidential debate. Bayh and Vilsack are delusional.
And then there are the people nobody expects to run right now. They always show up and, sometimes, like Carter and Clinton, they win. |
