If Hillary doesn't want to increase troops and doesn't want to now exit - then she is pretty much going along with the way things are right now.

Most people (I would guess 65% of the American public) would agree that we are in a mess wrt our situation in Iraq.

On a broad basis, my guess is that most people who have looked into the situation will agree with the findings of the ISG.

Strategically, what we are able to do going forward are limited.

1) We have to exit Iraq carefully per ISG report. We have to carefully tweak the time table and the on the ground tactics - taking into consider the inevitable surprises that will pop up at any given time.

2) Alternatively, if the administration can make the case that this is an existential struggle that will determine the greater good for all time (as they suggest), then we would have to "win" the war. In that event we would have to put in the necessary resources in terms of money and manpower. Iraq is a relatively small country. All we need to do is spend a few trillion dollars (which we can easily afford, if the threat is real) and occupy the country militarily with a few hundred thousand troops.

I am fairly certain, Hillary will keep option 2 (or some variation of it) on the table, but she will opt for some variation of the ISG recommendation or option 1.
