Framing the argument in terms of "you either support Iraq or you hate the USA" simply isn't fair.

A lot of people think of the USA as a great country - just with poor leadership - at the moment.

"Victory" in Iraq is a nebulous target right now. Its possible that the whole "truly democratic unity government that is a beacon of light in the Middle East and a strong ally on the war on terror" argument may be just too divorced from reality.

I think thats the way a lot of people now see things. Say we surge and set up 500 check-points in Baghdad and seriously manage to put a lid on the violence. Is that success? The economy cannot function for long where going to work means going through five 1/2 hour long checkpoints and the return the same. So at some point we have to back off. Boom - some assh#le Sunni blows up a Shiite Mosque up with 100 people inside and we are back to square one. Meanwhile another 1000 - 1500 soldiers are killed and and another 150,000 billion $$ hard money is down the drain.

Thats the way some people see things - getting the Sunnis and Shiites to live together is a mug's game that has no realistic possibility of success even if we can temporarily halt the violence with a surge.

Thats not "hating America" that may just be thinking in realistic terms.
