Gore actually blew it much worse. He should have won by 15%.
But no one has ever defeated a war-time president. Even Nixon with his unpopular Vietnam War won by 20%, a huge landslide.

McCain also had Bush on the ropes in 2000 but blew it after being smeare. Kerry may have actually won in 2004 (see RFK Jr's reports) but we'll never know it because paperless voting machines don't leave hard evidence. Kerry was cheated and smeared both and is furious about it. He will never let that happen again. And Edwards didn't help either btw. Edwards's job was to win Iowa, Missouri and Florida. He didn't make any difference.

One thing is for sure, when Bush-Rove decided to be totally lawless and unethical and have no scruples, they were able to win, but the fault for thir cheating and lying belongs to them and to the media and voters who didn't reject them. The victims of smear campaigns cannot really be blamed because there is no proven way to effectively defend against a smear campaign.

If you have one, please present it to us.

This is why we ought to find some way to make smear campaigns illegal, same as false advertising on TV commercials.
