No matter what Kerry had done the smearvets would have kept lying because those lies were Bush's entire campaign. Bush could not win on any issues so they went with 100% smears and misleading ads.

But you're right, Kerry should not have under-estimated just how dirty and dishonest Bushies would be. He knew they were going to attack his anti-war activities (which he's proud of and was willing to defend) but he had no idea they'd actually make up lies about all his medals.

McCain was also destroyed by Bush-Rove's smears of his comoabt record.

These kinds of smears are a new thing, just the sheer dishonesty of them. Past smear campaigns have at least had some basis in truth. For instance, Clinton really did play around with women, though I'm sure he never raped or mishandled any women. So that smear campaign was half lies, half truth. The Kerry amd McCain smear campaign were 98% total BS. Kerry did release all his military records. That's another lie. His military record has been more investigated than anyone's in history going back to Nixon's dirty tricks team which also used John O'Neill, though he didn't lie as much in 1971 as he did in 2004.

In 2008, Kerry will be immune from all those past smears. especially since McCain has denounced all those smearvet bastards.
