The muskets used at the time had poor accuracy and rate of fire. (There where a few rifles which were more accurate, but had an even slower rate of fire, and most soldiers were not equipped with them). You still had many people killed by bayonets. Fighting in formation still made some sense, some of the time (depending on your opponent and the terrain).

But that was changing. By the time of the civil war, tightly packed formations made for blood baths, and the more accuracy and firepower increased the more such formations disappeared.
