Mauritania is actually a strong mining country. In Michael Palin's excellent travel show Sahara, he visits Mauritiania and travels on an enormously long train that is primarily ore cars with a few passenger cars added on the end.

For any of you that haven't seen them, I strongly recommend all of Michael Palin's -- think Monty Python -- travel shows. He is the perfect amiable host, and veers off the beaten track to some very interesting places.
