I've often wondered if there was any
geothermal potential from played out
oil and gas wells ..

The wells already exist and the geologic
structures are characterized by a porous
permeable rock layer with an impermeable
cap rock layer .. sounds like the right sort
of geology to extract low grade heat ..

When following PO discussions I always
see references to water flooding of nearly
played out fields or oil and gas wells that
are experiencing a high ( > 30% ) water cut ..
Wonder what the water temps are ??

Try googling 'abandoned wells' .. There's
10s of thousands of them in the US alone ..
Surely, a few are in the right sort of geologic
structures to exploit for heat ..

Even if it's not enough to generate steam it would
be sufficient to power a stirling generator or provide
space/district heating for an entire town ..
