I understand how it works.

But if I just ask someone to record on it, I either have to have little control over what gets deleted when it gets recorded, or I have to go over each show on the list with the other person over the phone and decide to keep it or not.

OTOH she has her own Tivo, maybe she will record it on that, or tape it on VHS.
