Scoobah,

That is a complex question, but I will give you a relatively simplistic answer.**

Abram, a non-Jew, "the father of a multitude", longed for a home land when he left Ur. As the story goes he was seeking a home land for his dusty culture-less tribe who did not live at peace with the Sumerians.

Since he was not Jewish, but a Hebrew, the term Zionist would not be a good fit.

**There is a chap on SI who goes by the ID of "Shalom". He is very knowledgeable on these matters. His interpretations see to come from a Christian perspective.

May I recommend a great author on this subject?
