I'm not so sure that was a hoax either.

If someone gets subconsciously influenced by money or by the popularity of an idea, and becomes less than objective about it, and comes to dubious conclusions, would you call it a hoax? I wouldn't. Coming to, and reporting a dubious, and unsupported or even clearly incorrect conclusion, because of self interest would only be a hoax if it was part of a deliberate plant to deceive. If your deceiving yourself its not a hoax.
