First, the EU's unemployment rate is always going to be higher than the US's because unemployment is treated differently there.

So you think unemployment in the EU isn't higher than the US, that its just a statistical aberration?

I don't know. I don't think anyone knows for sure. We don't have a clear handle on what the American unemployment rate is. The number we see each month counts only the people still receiving benefits. Its likely that the EU's rate is higher but I can't say for sure 100%.

Or by "treated differently there" are you talking about more generous unemployment benefits? True they to tend to keep unemployment levels higher, but that's not exactly a good result.

As I understand it, a person receives unemployment benefits for two years. So people who are unemployed can stay on the list for up to two years; that's what I meant by a different treatment of the unemployed..

There are a whole host of reasons for that fact that have little to do with socialism.

Perhaps, but social democrat/semi-socialist polices have a lot to with it.

What is your proof?

For the poor and average resident of the EU, life is much better than it is for the poor or average resident of the US.

Poor? Possibly. Average? No.

Both. You don't have to worry about health insurance; you are guaranteed a pension when you retire; you are covered for two years when you get unemployed......to name a few benefits. Such a safety net does wonders for the psyche of the average citizen.
