Normalized for service??
People in advanced countries with national health care systems are getting excellent health service. Sure, you may have to wait a few months for some procedures, but population health statistics in those countries are far better than those in the US, and that is the only objective measure of health service.
You switch from one side of the system to the other
Having a bureaucracy checking on providers doesn't mean that for profit providers are not successful providing lots of unneeded health care. They simply have to spend a lot of time justifying both the unneeded tests, procedures and drugs as well as the needed ones.
The evidence that the US health delivery system is seriously dysfunctional is overwhelming. We spend more than 15% of our GDP on health while all other advanced countries spend around 10% or less, even though their populations are older. What's worse, our population health statistics, like life expectancy, infant mortality, etc. are far worse than almost any other advanced country.

I don't know what aspects of our health care system make it so much worse than other countries', but it is becoming such a huge problem that the only sensible thing to do is abandon it entirely and simply copy one of the systems that work. |
