When a smart-ass kid turns 18 it's actually to his benefit to get put in line with a good ass-kicking. It's like an introduction to the adult world. When a person is allowed to get away with something long enough he/she just can't understand it when somebody holds them accountable for their actions. Try telling a kid nowadays "When you're done with school you have to move out and support yourself", or "You want a car? Fine! Get a job, save you're money, and buy one! Oh, and don't forget the insurance, because I don't want you running up MINE!"
