He spent nearly 1.5 years in school learning to identify subs. He was then assigned to an ASW squadron and ended up flying over 2000 hours off carriers

2 points.

1 he was flying off of a target, not an aircraft carrier. There are 2 types of ships in the Navy, submarines and targets.

Second after all of that schooling and flying time he still couldn't find an American sub if it was locked in a one mile square of the ocean and pinging actively.
