Not the worst idea out there. As the sun shines on your house, while you are at work, it converts solar electricity into stored hydrogen that you can put into your car as needed.

Could it be done for $500? That seems more like hype than anything else. But I guess with mass production, you never know. Hydrogen has a big problem of not being energy dense enough to be practical and is also carries an explosion risk. I think in the long run electricity will be the energy storage medium for automobilies.

But if this could be done for $500, then it could find interest if some of the other technical problems with hydrogen can be worked out. I spend over $1,500 on gasoline every year. If I could recoup that in 4 months using a hydrogen system and then run free for the life of the system. That is something that would be worth looking at.
