If you work for a company, you're going to be covered by their carrier. This is not the case if you're an individual looking to buy insurance. Read up on some real issues. If you have had cancer, how many insurance companies will provide you with coverage?

Nonsense. Even company policies have preexisting exclusions. Preexisting exclusions are almost 100% the result of the fact that the population is not required to carry mandatory coverage. To understand this, look at auto insurance and how they deal with bad drivers.

If everyone had to carry a certain minimum policy, then even bad risk/preexisting conditions would be covered, and you could switch carriers, because they are all in the same boat. Insurance works as long as the carrier can compute the risk. It does not work when the individual does not carry insurance until they get sick. It is simply math.

OTOH a single payer system covers EVERYONE.

What the hell does single payer have to do with everyone being covered? Everyone being covered is the issue, not single payer. Why can't you get such a simple fact straight?
