Methane is basically natural gas and I recalled as I was reading your message that there was (is still, I guess) a plan in the making about using the natural gas home delivery system to power our cars, suitably modified to run on natural gas and plenty are today, from buses to taxis which use a pressurized tank for storage. At the home there would be a compressor unit which would relatively quickly recharge your car's pressure tank. Then the system would shut off. That's the beauty - it shuts off! In a farm setting the cows NEVER shut off - and thus the need to flare the excess (whatta shame!) or use some other rather expensive storage set up.

Those flares could be the new filling station marker for NG car users - pull in, refill, real cheap, and you are on your way! The compressor at the production point is fairly cheap, I think, $500-$1000.
