But were to think about it for a moment, you would realize intuitively that Sirius is not running HM yet. Their receivers can't decode it. What would be the point?

No need to "think" about this point. Do you think that these SDAR companies are the first one's that modify their compression technologies on an ongoing basis?

This happens all the time.. Take, Cellular Telephones for instance. Since 1996, CDMA has gone through no less than 4 different upgrades to the technology.

IS-95, IS-95A, IS-95B, EV-DO, etc.

With each of these upgrades came, in some cases, a 400% increase in spectrial effeciencies. Yet, you can still take a CDMA phone manufactured in 1996 using the original IS-95 standard, and make/receive a phone call.. Because the standards are designed to be backward compatible with previous versions. In the press, I have seen SIRI mention that "new receivers" in the field will be able to take advantage of these efficiences, while older units will not, but they older units are still fully functional.

Don't forget that all of these filed units are probably re-programmable to some extent. In my opinon.
