The Yalta and Potsdam conferences were agreements between allies. The USSR was a paper tiger as far as military superiority over the US. The rest of the Eastern European countries were totally ruined by the nazis and the Soviets as they pursued the nazis.

As to political and social policy in Europe try and get 25 nations to agree on anything. That they have agreed on the EU is a political contribution of tremendous importance for both the US and 3rd world countries. As to social policies you just have to look at the Scandinavian model to realize the importance of the social policies in effect there.

You seem to belong to that group of Americans which refuses to accept any progress that doesn't fall into a set of preconceived notions as embodied in the America of the 1700s. I suppose you use leeches instead of antibiotics.
