There is no "AMA monopoly." Many physicians don't belong to AMA, just as many lawyers don't belong to American Bar Association. These are just lobbying groups.

What is necessary is a state license, which you can get if you pass the boards and jump through all the other hoops.

My niece is a resident in Georgia after two years at an offshore medical school and passing the boards.
