A fishing buddy in Alaska had a technique for telling whether clams he dug had paralytic shellfish poison. He fed them to the cats first and if the cats didn't die he ate the rest himself.

PSP killed a hundred or so Aleuts on their way back home after being enslaved by the Russians at Sitka. They ate some clams and every one of them died.

Bottom line, my pal's strategy makes sense.

So go for it.
