Kerry wasn't the first candidate to come away from the convention appearing to be a different person than won the primaries. Al Gore was suddenly Lieberman's best friend. The problem is that the Democratic party has too many poll driven image crafters. Instead of just polishing the product they have, they want to make a whole new candidate based on some test results and focus groups. Kerry just made that obvious. It's not that his Vietnam story wasn't real, but it wasn't the story he ran on for the primaries and so when the swift-boaters lit into him he was forced to defend a characterature of himself. Contrast that with Clinton. The guy who wagged a finger about Monica was the same guy who explained his way past Gennifer Flowers during the primaries. He didn't lose the support of the public since they knew who they had voted for and knew that that was not his primary story. The Republicans attacked him on the story, a swift-boating over whitewater, gennifer, or travel agents, but it didn't stick with anyone but the wingnuts because it was it was not his primary story. If Clinton had been running as a great family man he would have been crushed.
