Medicare ..... to be dropped to 55

Massive retirements would be a problem with dropping the age for Medicare to 55. Also it would be a problem with universal health coverage.

Many people I know would retire now if they had free or low cost medical insurance.

Inducing those people to keep working is beneficial to society since those people are still very productive and can expect to live another 20 to 30 years. The cost would be enormous to society if there was massive retirement of people 55 to 65.

In fact, increasing income taxes to pay for universal health care would double that inducement. If income tax rates doubled and you received free health care, then why keep working? What would be the consequences if most everyone 55 or older retired? It could be ugly.

We need to think carefully about the unintended consequences of reduce age for Medicare coverage or universal health care for all. The cost could hit us in massive and unexpected ways.
