I'm not sure how many we killed during the VN conflict, but I do know they were waging war to impose their system on people who largely didn't want it.

Yes, Viet Nam is still officially communist. That will change in time. And the country is trying to buddy up to the US (inviting investment, inviting the US Navy to dock at Danang) now that they realize how poorly communism works. They welcome back the refugees they drove away and the people suck up to them like they're royalty.
