In 2000 and 2004, the cheaters won. Bush's campaign went over the line, way past being "tough" into highly unethical areas.

Hillary will only be the Dem nominee if Al Gore doesn't step in. He can stop her cold. Kerry might have too in time if he had really tried. Expect an "anything but Hillary and no thanks Obama" movement that will grow bigger and stronger as the first primaries approach. Edwards could be the compromise white male candidate, or maybe a Vilsack or Biden could rise in stature, but in the end Hillary will be lucky to win it.

Against the Republican, Gore can beat any of them, Hillary would make it very close, and Obama would lose. Hillary's greatest asset is her husband who remains wildly popular despite the outrageous smear campaign against him in the late 90's. Most Americans would agree that we were much better off in the 90's under Clinton than under Bush-Cheney. Gore would also benefit from that of course. No matter what though, do not expect Hillary to move to the left. The CLintons are already very popular with black voters and don't really need to pander to the anti-war left. So long as she can handle Obama she doesn't need to.
