Reagan sent Iran arms. Carter did not. Carter tried to rescue the hostages which reports say Reagan allied bribed Iran to hold onto until after the election. If the Carter rescue mission had not run into a sand-storm, Carter would have been re-elected.

The Shah fell despite our trying to prop him up in the 60's and 70's. He fell because he persecuted his people and lived like a billionaire playboy, so he became very unpopular with the masses. He was also something of a western puppet and wasted tens of billions on US-made arms. If he had been a fair leader like King Hussein of Jordan he would have survived. Carter did not enable the Shah to fall. Nobody did. He did it to himself.

Attacking Iran was not a real option. It has never been. Iran is three times the size of Iraq and has always been protected to a degree by the Russians. Also, the majority of Iranians would love to get out from under the yoke of the Mullahs and in the 90's to 2003 they were definitely gradually taking back their government. Bush's Axis Of Evil speech and invasion of Iraq changed everything, stopped the moderates and put Islamic extremists back in charge. So twenty years of gradual progress was wiped out.

What we need now is a gradual move back toward moderation and diplomacy. Iran's economy is suffering so we can offer a carrot and a stick, not just a stick. The stick alone is counter-productive as we have seen over the past four years.
