We killed millions for being communists. That is inhuman. We made a political statement -- we don't like communism. And it accomplished nothing but the wholesale slaughter of innocent people, including millions of civilians. Now we invest in Vietnam, buy and self to and from Vietnam. People go there as tourists and eat in their restaurants. We do everything with Vietnam that we would do with any other country. And by some miracle we no longer feel the need to slaughter Vietnamese people for being communist. Left to their own social development they will choose their own path -- whatever that might be. The same would have been true if we had stayed out of their country altogether. French colonialists were driven from Vietnam even after they had partitioned Vietnam as part of their staged withdrawal -- and we were stupid enough to believe that we should take their place and prop up the colonial division that the French imposed splitting up one country and one people. We no longer believe that it is our business to slaughter them for being communist - and American business cozies right up to the Vietnamese, as we do to other communist states such as China. Every American company worth its salt is all over China. I don't recall anybody with any brains suggesting that we should go over there and try to invade their country and try to kill them in the millions until they stop being communist. The invasion of Iraq was a tragedy for us and for Iraq, just as our attempt to decide the future of Vietnam was a tragedy for both them and us. We could have helped Iraq -- we chose not to, unless you call propping up Saddam and egging him on to kill Muslims in Iran 'help'. We could have continued to go after terrorists as a primary goal, as we did in the months immediately after 9/11 -- but we chose not to, preferring instead to make a political statement by invading Iraq. Now we are saddled with the outcome of these catastrophic mistakes -- mistakes that come about when ideologues believe it is ok to suck America into wars that do nothing but make a political statement while slaughtering innocent people. Invading Iraq was more stupid that our war in Vietnam.
