Bush put the extremists in charge after the Iraq invasion and Axis Of Evil speech. Iran had been moderating in the prior years and the moderates were winning the elections until Bush came in. Then the extremists won the elections and put the current president in power. That would definitely not have happened if not for the Axis Of Evil speech, Bushie refusal to talk to iran and the invasion of Iraq. I am talking about present tense, not the 1970's. Carter had little to do with the Shah falling though. Some people blame Carter for letting the Shah get hospital care in the US but the damage in Iran was done over the previous decade. Do you think Carter could have stopped it somehow? If so, how?
